After reading a story about children trying to survive in the desert without enough food and water, Mrs. Myers' 5th grade reading class was inspired to find ways to help others. We have come to the realization that we can all help someone in some way! Whether our gift to someone is as simple as a smile to lift spirits or help with items needed for daily life, everyone has something they can contribute. We have selected three areas in which to help:
Kokomo Rescue Mission Men's shelter
Open Arms Women's Shelter
Helping Hands of Miami County
We would like to invite students to help us collect items or money to donate to these three groups. The needed items are listed on the about section. Any money donated will be allocated for Helping Hands of Miami County. Checks can be made out to Maconaquah Elementary.
Homelessnessis both a form of poverty and an acute condition of residential instability. Homelessness is compounded by behavioral problems, mental health policy changes, disparities in health and health care, racial inequalities, fluctuations in affordable housing, and lack of social support.
Housing A lack of affordable housing and the limited scale of housing assistance programs have contributed to the current housing crisis and to homelessness. Recently, foreclosures have also increased the number of people who experience homelessness.
Poverty Homelessness and poverty are inextricably linked. Poor people are frequently unable to pay for housing, food, childcare, health care, and education. Difficult choices must be made when limited resources cover only some of these necessities. Often it is housing, which absorbs a high proportion of income that must be dropped. If you are poor, you are essentially an illness, an accident, or a paycheck away from living on the streets.
